A 36-year-old man has died from injuries he sustained when he fell from a moving vehicle in Waimea on Oct. 10.

A 36-year-old man has died from injuries he sustained when he fell from a moving vehicle in Waimea on Oct. 10.

He has been identified as Leo Koichy of Waikoloa.

Officers responding to an 8:43 a.m. call to Lalamilo Farm Road in Waimea determined Koichy had been riding in the back of a flatbed truck that was heading to another farm lot when he fell off the truck and hit his head on the road.

The unresponsive man was initially taken to North Hawaii Community Hospital and later transferred to The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu, where he was pronounced dead Oct. 23 at 5:56 p.m.

The incident is being investigated as a negligent homicide and an autopsy has been ordered.

Koichi’s death is the 11th official traffic fatality so far this year compared to 23 at this time last year.
